Alabama Determines Priority for Next Period: Gambling Industry

After the Senate of Alabama opened its legislative sessions, concerns have emerged and gambling has been considered a priority. The lawmakers and governor look for possible actions that will maintain the security of the gambling sector as well as protect the state from betting interests…

Proposal

The legislative session officially opened with Sen. Jim McClendon, the Republican from Birmingham, introducing a bill that would forbid gambling interests from forwarding money to state officials – the Governor, Lt. Governor and other candidates for state offices.

According to McClendon observation, all these gambling interests have reportedly already transferred lawmakers substantial sums of money and this practice should be terminated.

He stated:

“I am not making claims of corruption but we must be very wary of the appearance of corruption. I’m not making claims of undue influence based on monetary contributions, but we must be very wary of the appearance of undue influence.”

Not only the state senator is concerned about the gambling sphere, but Alabama Governor Kay Ivey is as well. The governor has already stated that she will not enter any discussion with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians on the possible expansion of gambling facilities if she doesn’t get reliable information about tax revenues for the state.

Ivey also insisted to learn about a sum of money that will come from the lottery and hopes that nothing will be done before she inspects all the numbers.

Meanwhile, it is already announced that the House Budget Committee has examined the eventual revenue influence of a legal lottery. One of the lawmakers hopes to see Bill ing an initiative and going to the ballot in the November.

Additional Actions

Governor Ivey has just announced a fact-finding program when the of a committee will examine all gambling issues in the state.

Ivey noted:

“But I want them to be thorough and get the facts. That’s all I want is the facts, not recommendations. I just want the facts about how much monies the state can expect to gain if we just do a lottery or if we do expanded gaming or if we do a compact (an agreement with the Poarch Creeks)”.

Gambling activity is already legal in three US states around Alabama. Most local officials believe that the state should follow the same practice and legalize gambling operations. According to the beliefs, the entire gambling sector would generate about $1 billion in revenues
