West Virginia is the fifth US state to make sports betting legal – after authorizing sports betting in the state.
Last Thursday morning, Hollywood Casino in Charles Town took the first sports bet – a few days ahead of a planned launch. The news, accompanied by the photo of the sports wager receipt, was announced on Twitter.
The first bet, a $50 wager, was placed on West Virginia University’s team winning the NCAA Division 1 Championship. This outcome’s odds currently stand at 60-1.
Hollywood Casino’s sportsbook is provided by the world’s most esteemed betting group, UK’s William Hill.
The grand opening of Hollywood Casino’s sportsbook took place this past Saturday at Charles Town Races and the total amount wagered on the first day of college football stands at $340,000.
The grand opening was attended by a large number of interested parties, local population as well as industry officials and local celebrities.
West Virgnia has four more casinos on its soil and they will be launching their own sportsbooks this fall.
