Governor Jeff Landry has appointed Christopher Hebert as the Chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB), marking a historic milestone as Hebert becomes the first African-American to hold this position. The LGCB oversees all gaming activities under its jurisdiction, ensuring the integrity and regulation of the gaming industry.
Hebert, who has served as Assistant Attorney General for Louisiana for over 19 years and as Director of the Gaming Division for the past 8 years, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He played a pivotal role in the regulation of sports wagering in Louisiana and spearheaded initiatives like the Problem Gambling Resource Services program, aimed at raising awareness about responsible gaming.
Governor Landry expressed confidence in Hebert’s ability to lead the LGCB, stating, “He has the experience and background needed to properly regulate such a large industry. I look forward to the great work he will do for our State and our economy.”
In his previous role as Director of the Gaming Division, Hebert collaborated closely with outgoing chairman Ronnie Johns, who retired earlier this year. Hebert’s tenure saw advancements in gaming regulation, including the introduction of legal digital sports betting in January 2022.
“I am both humbled and honored that Governor Landry has tapped me as the first African-American Chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board,” said Hebert. “I vow to continue the hard work of previous chairmen in ensuring that gaming is free from criminal and corrupt elements.”
Hebert’s appointment comes at a critical time as Louisiana’s gaming industry continues to grow, with more than 20 physical casinos and expanded sports betting opportunities across the state. His leadership is expected to steer the LGCB through ongoing regulatory challenges and opportunities, maintaining a fair and transparent gaming environment.
“Hebert is a great asset to the gaming industry and regulatory community,” noted Mississippi regulator Jay McDaniel. “His experience and integrity make him well-suited to lead the board and ensure the industry operates responsibly.”
Christopher B. Hebert, a native of New Roads, LA, holds a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University and a law degree from Southern University Law Center. He is actively involved in professional organizations such as the International Masters of Gaming Law and the National Council on Problem Gambling, demonstrating his commitment to advancing responsible gaming practices.
