The Great Britain Gambling Commission (GBGC) has made the announcement stating that all online gambling operators are obliged to apply for GAMSTOP. This multi-operator self-exclusion scheme gives consumers the possibility to take a break from participating in the activities in all establishments via a single request.
Such a system aims to simplify and speed up the procedure, as players won’t have to restrain themselves from each operator individually. With over 200 web-based content suppliers ed in the system, the helpful tool will be made more approachable to those who wish to pause from online games.
Neil McArthur, from Gambling Commission, pointed out:
“By the 31 March all online operators will be required to participate in the multi-operator self-exclusion scheme. Although the vast majority of operators are already participating in GAMSTOP this will make the coverage comprehensive.”
The measure comes as a part of the ongoing collaboration with the Commission’s partners to implement the National Strategy for Reducing Gambling Harms.
Self-exclusion schemes are the most effective when combined with other prevention tools such as gambling blocking software and payment card blocking. For that reason, operators are required to implement all the necessary measures to minimize the risk of gambling-related harm.
The industry’s main task is to create safe products…
…and have a thorough understanding of its consumers. In addition to this, individuals experiencing gambling harm need to have smooth access to all the or treatment options, to prevent further and bigger damages.
McArthur added:
“We welcome the fact that GAMSTOP have got to this stage in their development and encourage them to continue to improve their offer, particularly in relation to preventing those who have self-excluded being targeted by direct marketing.”
While Instant Win Games offered by lotteries will also become non-available for self-excluded players, low-risk (draw-based) games will still be at their disposal. The opportunity to take a break from such games is available through individual lottery suppliers.
Last year Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) ministers held meetings with banks and gambling operators. The participants suggested how companies could use technology and customer data to provide assistance to vulnerable clients, including those using credit cards.
Culture Minister Helen Whately commented on the new set of measures:
“We have been clear to all businesses that have connections to gambling, such as operators, social media platforms and banks, that they must be socially responsible and use the power of technology and data to help consumers manage their spending and protect them from harm.
Over the last two years…
… the Commission has also introduced and strengthened new rules for age verification. This also includes additional online protections and restrictions to complimentary games and a tighter set of rules regarding gambling advertising.

UKGC is one of the most stringent regulators, but I approve these measures. Some people simply go too far, and they need to have all the and help available.
