Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act is one of the strict regulatory instruments in the state. According to its rules, casinos and casino employees are not allowed to make donations for political purposes. The entire idea behind the ban is to keep transparency around legislative decisions that could have an impact on the local gambling operations. However, it seems that the previous bill will remain the history while the new bill is looking to take its place.
Michigan’s House of Representatives has just ed bill 4307 on December 4. The Bill is one of the acts which the expansion that would lead to the legalization of sports betting, online gaming, and fantasy sports. The idea has already been approved in the Michigan House but now it needs the greatest from local Congress. If the political contribution bill reaches two-thirds of lawmakers votes, it will be repealed.
According to the newly proposed Bill, certain individuals with criminal convictions would be able to apply for a casino license. If the applicant is convicted of felonies, he would have to wait a decade after the conviction to reapply for a license. If the person is accused and convicted of a misdemeanor, the pending period is five years. Additionally, background checks are to be removed for certain licensees.
The Innovative Bill could be useful for the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). According to its prescriptions, of the board would be compensated $1,000 for MGCB attended meeting, while the chair would be paid $1,250. It would result in $6000 and $7,500 per year, having into consideration that the board meets six times per year.
Not all House representatives the Bill. State Representative, Bill Sowerby, believes that the proposed Bill will have a negative effect on the local gaming sector. He said:
“Millionaire and billionaire casino owners will now be allowed to give money to state legislators. Even worse, casino owners will no longer have to disclose to the public their past felony crime convictions, their financial failures — including bankruptcies — or their failures to pay their taxes.”
At the moment, there are several US states which ban political contributions by casinos and their workers. Some of them like New Jersey are restrictive regarding the same thing. Corporations are, on the other side, limited from making donations to election campaigns. However, they can contribute to political committees that underpin those campaigns.
