Kentucky Launches Regulated Sports Betting Market with a Bang
March 24, 2019 Aleksandra Zolotic
It seems that sports wagering in New Hampshire is closer to becoming regulated, as a bill approving such activities was advanced to the state Senate. The amended version of the House Bill 480 was ed by a 269-82 vote…
… by House of Representatives for further discussion.
If the Senate okays the bill, the New Hampshire Lottery Commission will be in charge of regulating the sports betting market. The legalization would not only allow consumers to place bets at various locations state-wide but they would also be able to do so…
…via online and mobile platforms.
If no issues appear, the first legal sports bets could be placed around July 1st, 2020.
The initial ideas for approval appeared at the beginning of the year. Though the bill was modified since, some important details are not clarified yet. For example, the license cost, as well as taxes for sports betting operators, are still not familiar. However, a fiscal note on the bill suggests that, if the regulation was to take place…
…sports wagering could generate up to $7.5m(£5.7m/€6.6m) in revenue during the first year.
However, the number of retail sportsbooks is already approved – ten of them will be initially allowed in the state. The amendment also clarifies the events where sports wagering will be prohibited. In addition to this, a council for responsible gambling will also be established.
Before these ideas even first took place, there were uneasy issues with the US Department of Justice. New Hampshire launched a legal challenge against DoJ’s revised opinion on the Wire Act. They claimed that the new stance is not faithful to the text, structure, purpose or legislative history of the legalization.
Filed on behalf of the NH Lottery Commission, the lawsuit states the stance is beyond the DoJ’s power to enforce. In addition to this, there are demands for declaratory judgment setting out the rights of all parties involved.
Thanks to efforts of local lawmakers, sports betting is actually legal in only a few states thus far, such as Montana, Mississippi, Delaware, Nevada and six more. Online gambling is regulated in even fewer jurisdictions…
…as only 4 states approve this activity as legal. Those are Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nevada, and Delaware.
