Spanish online gambling market results for the first quarter of the year are finally out and are showing a significant rise comparing to the same period last year.
The numbers are showing that the market in this Iberian Peninsula country increased more than one-fifth during the Q1 of 2019…
…even though the poker vertical is showing a decline.
Spanish regulatory body, also known as Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) revealed the numbers for Q1 on Monday.
And, it looks like the results are showing that locally licensed online operators generated managed to see a revenue of €193.2 million…
…which is a small 2.14% increase comparing to the revenue from Q4 of 2018.
But, at the same time, it is a 20.1% improvement comparing to the first quarter of 2018.
Even though the report is showing some increases in the results, sequential growth in the Spanish online market has been slowing down in the past year.
Also, the growth in Q1 marks actually the lowest percentage gain since the 2.3% rise recorded in the second quarter of 2018.
However, that quarter featured the first half of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is something Q1 2019 lacked, so the results might not be depicting an accurate situation.
The revenue coming from online sports betting activities rose 26.2% year-on-year to €100.8 million…
…even though the percentage gain from the last quarter of 2018 was only 0.63%.
In-play betting’s share of overall betting revenue was up 11.5% in comparison to Q4, while pre-match revenue was down 11%.
Betting turnover increased for a good 12.6% comparing to the same period last year but was 10.5% below Q4’s results.
On the other hand, exchange betting turnover and revenue dropped 46.2% and 21.6%, which is quite a lot.
Racing turnover increased almost one-third in comparison to the same time last year…
…but racing revenue was down nearly one-third.
The revenue coming from the online casino vertical rose by one-fifth to €67.1 million, thanks primarily to the slots revenue that bloomed 29.2% to €37.5 million.
Even though it made slightly less than €3 million, baccarat had the most dramatic percentage gain, rising almost 1400% year-on-year…
…even though its turnover rose 31.3%.
Online poker revenue was €21.2 million, which is a 1.4% decrease year-on-year although it is at the same time a 2.7% rise comparing to the Q4.
Cash games dropped 5.7% to just under €7.5 million, while tournaments improved 5% to €13.7 million.
Cash game spending dropped 1.6% year-on-year and 10.4% sequentially, despite the liquidity-sharing pact Spain has with and Portugal.
The bingo revenue was down 8.6% year-on-year to €3.2 million while ‘contests’ managed to rise 0.5% to €940k.
Spanish-licensed operators spent around €92.2 million together on marketing efforts in the first quarter, which is a 21.4% year-on-year rise.
Advertising was up 16.1% to €47.8 million, although this was down 6.5% from the last quarter of 2018, which probably reflects operators’ fear of the government’s threats to put a ban on gambling ads, just like they did with tobacco ads.
Spending on marketing rose for a staggering 62.4% to €10.2 million, while bonus offers increased 14.9% to €29.3 million. The number of active online s grew 13.1% to over 909k.

Spain is not doing that bad at all, just don’t know why their government likes to threat with bans when they make so much money from gambling.
