West Virginia Generates a Total of $2.2m in Sports Wagering Revenue in January

Certified gambling operators in West Virginia acquired a collective $2.2m in sports wagering revenue in January. Mobile gaming was the most popular form of betting for consumers in the previous month.

During the four weeks of the month, to January 25, 2020, punters spent an overall amount of $35.4m on sports betting, scoring $32.9m in the process. Even though the revenue collected via mobile platform was lower ($970,873), player spending was higher than that of retail. A total of $19.7m was wagered via approved digital platforms.

The main source of income during the month was retail, with licensed operators generating revenue of $1.2m after consumers bet $15.7m at land-based venues statewide.

Positive Expectations for Mobile Market

IGT will supply sports wagering at its hubs in West Virginia and also Arkansas.

…Delaware North re-enter will West Virginia’s sports betting market. Just to remind, the company was already present at this market, operating its BetLucky brand in partnership with Miomni Gaming, but it ceased the activities in March last year after a disruption to services.

However, the gap didn’t affect the figures significantly, as the reports from the previous month revealed that punters still wagered $56.7m via mobile and grabbed a collective of $51.9m in 2019.

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races Leads the Way (Again)

In of individual distributors, Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races was the major contributor once again. Leading the market in January, the venue posted $1.6m in revenue after taking $22.9m in wagers.

This establishment operates its sportsbook via a partnership with DraftKings and has been the top contributor throughout months since the market was approved. For example, in October, this parlor has recorded revenue of $3.5 million and has processed $19.1m in bets.

With a total of $348,951 for the month…

…the Greenbrier private resort ranked second, followed by Mountaineer Casino and its William Hill sportsbook on $227,938 in total sports wagering revenue. William Hill’s facility doesn’t offer mobile wagering services yet.

Delaware North’s Mardi Gras and Wheeling hubs have been inactive since March due to the dispute with Miomni Gaming, but thanks to the newest IGT agreement, this is set to change.
